Following a social media post Crystal Liu, who portrays Mulan in the forthcoming remake, shared in support of the Hong Kong police force, protestors have ben boycotting Disney and the film. "Disney's Mulan actress, Liu Yifei, supports police brutality and oppression in Hong Kong", tweeted Twitter user @sdnorton.

The Hong Kong protests began in June in response to the government's consideration of a new extradition bill that could potentially allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to China at the discretion of its leaders.

Liu, in her own post, added in Chinese, "I also support the Hong Kong police", and included heart and strong-arm emojis.

The #BoycottMulan trend first gained momentum on Thursday, a day after Liu used the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo to support the police.

Users on Twitter, such as @BSquidboi, have expressed their disappointment in Yifei's decision, saying, "Liu Yifei, who will be playing Mulan herself, has shown support towards the police in Hong Kong who are now beating down peaceful protestors, she is the goddaughter of one of the richest buisnessmen in mainland China".

It said on Wednesday that an application for protests to be held in the terminal must be made in advance with a Letter of No Objection from police. Video has also emerged of Hong Kong protesters waving American flags and singing America's national anthem.
