All the companies have 30 days to pay the penalty to the United States Treasury.

Other broadcasters that have been found to have misused the warning tones include Los Angeles-area radio stations KDAY and KDEY-FM.

Why it matters: The FCC said the use of actual or simulated emergency alert tones during non-emergencies or outside of authorized testing periods is a serious public safety concern.

The ABC network's late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! has gotten itself into some trouble.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" got fined $104,000 for using simulated EAS tones in two scenes in February. In its consent decree with the FCC, it admitted it did broadcast the tones "in the absence of an actual emergency" or authorized test in an October 3, 2018 broadcast.

Jimmy Kimmel's U.S. talk show has been fined £325,000 for using the emergency warning tone in a comedy sketch.

Hong Kong airport suspends all check-ins
The official state news agency Xinhua said in a commentary Tuesday that "violent radicals" were pushing Hong Kong into an "abyss". So far, more than 160 outbound flights have been cancelled , with more expected to continue if the protests don't cease soon.

(Gizmodo) Last October Jimmy Kimmel Live! made some expensive jokes about President Donald Trump's ability to send emergency alerts to approximately 225 million phones across the country.

"These rules aim to protect the integrity of the alert system by helping to avoid confusion when the tones are used". The system allows the USA president to warn Americans via text, radio, and television of unsafe weather and to announce AMBER alerts for missing children.

The skit - which takes the form of a horror movie trailer - pokes fun at Trump as the film's characters become traumatized when the Commander-in-chief begins violating the alert system by sending out texts that read "witch hunt" and "fake news".

"Lone Star Law", which airs on Discovery's Animal Planet, was also deemed an offender, and will pay up $68,000 in penalties. That way, listeners aren't confused when there's an actual emergency that warrants the alert.

In addition to the fines, the companies agreed to "a strict compliance plan" to ensure those alerts will not be played again when there's no emergency, according to the agency.
