Trump phones Modi, stresses need to reduce India-Pakistan 'tensions'

Kashmir: Is the UN Security Council reluctant to get involved?

On August 5, the Centre had revoked the special status to Jammu and Kashmir by modifying Article 370 and also bifurcating the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The gathering comes as Indian authorities say they are easing a almost two-week old security crackdown in the region, restoring some landline phone service and easing restrictions on the movements of people in some areas.

He also tweeted that food and other stocks were available "in abundance".

He said the situation may turn into a human catastrophe anytime as the lack of food and medicines supplies may create a human crisis in the valley. The US withdraw the generalised system of preferences (GSP) benefits from India in March, following which New Delhi also imposed reciprocal sanctions.

The state and federal governments did not respond to questions about the number of incidents and the level of injuries. Public buses were running in rural areas, but soldiers limited the movement of people on mostly deserted streets in Srinagar, the region's main city. "This is an issue that impacts not just the region but the world".

Authorities in Indian-held Kashmir reimposed limits on people's movement on August 18 following a flare-up in violence as officials claimed to be easing their almost two-week crackdown sparked by a downgrade in the region's autonomy. The decision by the Hindu nationalist government in New Delhi has raised tensions with Pakistan and touched off anger in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. It said in a statement that Pakistani troops returned fire at the Indian posts from which mortar fire and anti-tank guided missiles had originated.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday there would be no talks with Pakistan until it acted against anti-India militant groups operating from its soil.

The conversation between Modi and Trump took place two days after the US President asked Khan to resolve the Kashmir issue with India bilaterally during a telephonic conversation. "The Afghan government sees no credible reason for Pakistan to maintain tens of thousands of military troops on its western frontier", she said.

Unfortunately, personal issues and legal troubles caused the Bears to release him after just three seasons. Benson ended his four-year career ranked second on the Longhorns' all-time rushing list with 5,540 yards.

He said India was captured, as Germany had been captured by Nazis, by a fascist, racist Hindu supremacist ideology and leadership. The celebrations were to mark the first United Nations Security Council meeting about the Kashmir issue for about five decades.

"The UNSC's decision to not issue a statement or call an emergency meeting on Kashmir shows its reluctance to get involved in this dispute", Anwar Iqbal, a Washington-based Pakistani analyst, told DW.

China's brazenly anti-India and pro-Pakistan stand at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the developments in Jammu and Kashmir (J and K), has cast a shadow on Sino-Indian relations in general, and the planned summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in India in October, in particular.

On Saturday, the Press Trust of India news agency said landline services in 17 out of more than 100 telephone exchanges had been made operational in Srinagar.

The government has said it is gradually restoring phone lines and easing the lockdown, but changes are slow.

On Friday, hundreds of demonstrators in Srinagar carried green Islamic flags and signs reading "Stop genocide in Kashmir, wake up world".

On Sunday family members held a wake for timber trader Sidiq Khan, 62, who relatives said had died after suffocating from tear gas fired by security forces in Srinagar.

Modi has defended the Kashmir changes as freeing the territory from separatism, and his supporters welcomed the move.
