Google announces Android rebrand, reveals official Android Q name

Android Q is now simply Android 10

We had eagerly been waiting on Google to announce which dessert it has chosen as the official name for the next iteration of Android, i.e Android Q.

With the release of Android 10, the company is abandoning its use of alphabetical dessert naming scheme for major Android releases.

Taking to a blog post, Vice President of Product Management for Android, Sameer Samat, wrote, "As a global operating system, it's important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world". Android 10 this year, Android 11 the next... you get the idea. However, for Android Q there is no tasty treat naming convention anymore, it will simply be known as Android 10. As well as introducing a new naming scheme, Google is also updating the branding for Android.

Fans of the show applauded the sweet and amusing nod to the Duchess, with one commenting: "Awww, that was really cute". It's just wrong to do this", a different user agreed.

We in the west may have had a good time with the names, and generally, we know how to pronounce all the names, except maybe Nougat, which different regions seem to have a different take on.

Google states that it has made a decision to change the naming scheme for its mobile operating system due to the earlier scheme wasn't always understood by everyone in the global community. Even Google thinks same, although the company in its announcement said there were many tempting "Q" desserts out there, but it needed simpler name for the global community. For example, L and R aren't distinguishable in some languages therefore making it harder to convey that Lollipop was the version that came after KitKat. Google also mentions that Pies are not popular in many parts of the world and neither are marshmallows. As far as the nomenclature is concerned, the company has confirmed that it will be using numbers in the future.

Like always, the Android robot is still an essential part of the Android logo. The move is part of an attempt to globalize the operating system's branding and make it easier for customer to understand if their phone is running the latest version. Additionally, the particular shade of lime green that adorned the Android mascot and wordmark up until now was challenging for some people to read - especially anyone with colorblindness.
