South Korea to scrap intelligence-sharing pact with Japan amid history feud

North Korea’s Kim Oversaw the Test-Firing of New Weapon Again

The pact, inked in November 2016, allows the two US allies to share sensitive information on missile threats from North Korea, among other things.

South Korea's presidential office said it chose to terminate the intelligence deal because Japan's recent decision to downgrade South Korea's trade status caused a "grave" change in security cooperation between the countries. It's not clear what the immediate impact of its termination will be. "We'll continue to pursue bilateral and trilateral defense and security cooperation where possible".

The new commander of the U.S. Marine Corps said Wednesday that the transfer plan of its personnel from Japan's Okinawa to Guam is "progressing very well".

Seoul had initially been expected to extend the pact, given the importance of military cooperation between the United States, South Korea and Japan. "South Korea may be seen by Pyongyang, Beijing and Moscow to be weakening its alliance cooperation with the United States, leaving Seoul more exposed to regional geopolitics", said Easley. He told reporters that he summoned the South Korean ambassador and lodged a formal protest.

USA envoy on North Korea Stephen Biegun said on Wednesday he will not take up the post of ambassador to Russian Federation but will remain focused on making progress on the denuclearization of North Korea amid stalled negotiations.

"Special Representative Biegun, who leads the negotiation effort on behalf of the United States, is actually in the region today, tomorrow", Pompeo told CBS News in NY.

At that time, North Korea committed "to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and destroyed some tunnels and buildings at its Punggye-ri nuclear test site. "However, this will impact how the USA identifies South Korea as a strategic partner in defense".

The fate of the deal had divided people in South Korea.

North Korea has raised strong objections against South Korea importing weapons including the latest F-35 stealth fighters and conducting joint military drills with the US. The pact will expire November 23 if not renewed.

France says Kashmir bilateral issue between India and Pakistan
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan must be reduced. I wouldn't say they get along so great.

The announcement marks another low point as relations between the longtime rivals have deteriorated to their lowest point in decades.

-South Korea-Japan trilateral security cooperation. The Moon administration could conceivably change its mind before Saturday and allow the agreement to renew.

Berger stressed that Japan and Korea have common interests despite their differences, such as the threat posed by China and pursuing stability in Asia.

Liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who earlier declared his country would "never again lose" to Japan, used the August 15 anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan to extend an olive branch.

U.S. President Donald Trump had called for improved relations between the two earlier this month, saying heightened tensions between them put the United States in a "bad position". "South Korea and US will continue to strengthen and develop alliance between two countries".

Removing South Korea from a "white-list" of favoured export destinations means some Japanese exporters face more paperwork and on-site inspections before they can win permits, which could slow Korea-bound exports for a wide range of goods. The South Korean government, for its part, chose to downgrade Japan's trade status. South Korea denied the accusation.

However, South Korea's deputy national security adviser Kim Hyun-chong said yesterday that he expects the US-North Korea dialogue to unfold soon and go well, in comments made after his meeting with Mr Biegun in Seoul.
