Qantas Testing Unprecedented NYC-Sydney Flight

Qantas to test non-stop flights to London and New York

Three Boeing 787-9's flights will take off from October, with 40 passengers and crew.

Those on board will be subject to medical checks, while their sleep patterns and food consumption will be monitored, as Qantas bids to establish non-stop commercial flights from Australia's east coast to London and NY. The other will go from London to Sydney, only the second time a commercial airline has operated that flight, Qantas said. These will be used to monitor how sleep patterns, the lighting and what they eat, drink and watch onboard impacts their health and body clocks. The airline is going to be testing a direct flight from NY to Sydney, Australia.

A Qantas spokesman said the airline had chose to hire long-haul cabin crew because of a sustained improvement in the worldwide business in recent months.

Chairman Tony Carter said the airline was disappointed it did not meet the earnings forecast it set at the start of the financial year, but nevertheless achieved a solid result in the face of slowing demand.

"We'll have researchers from Monash and Sydney universities on board, running tests on crew wellbeing and passenger comfort for nearly 20 hours", Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said in a statement.

Carbon emissions from the flights will be fully offset, Qantas said. The pilots will be wearing electroencephalograms (EEGs), which will track brain wave patterns and alertness.

New Bond movie gets a title
The Bond 25 title has finally been revealed: Daniel Craig's fifth and potentially final outing as 007 is called No Time to Die . Film producers announced the moniker Tuesday, Aug. 20, for the film that has always been referred to simply as " Bond 25 ".

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the flights in themselves were ground breaking and hoped to make a decision on trailblazing, long-haul flights to NY and London by the end of 2019.

Two Qantas Airways Airbus A330 aircraft can be seen on the tarmac near the domestic terminal at Sydney Airport.

Currently, Singapore Airlines holds the record for longest commercial flight with an 18-and-a-half hour doozy between Singapore and Newark, NJ.

"Ultra-long-haul flying presents a lot of common-sense questions about the comfort and well-being of passengers and crew", said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce. A month later, Singapore Airlines announced a 19-hour flight from Singapore to NY. They will be looking at how to minimize jet lag and how to create a comfortable long-haul atmosphere.

Last year, Qantas began a 17-hour non-stop service from Perth to London, while Qatar runs a 17.5-hour service between Auckland and Doha. For crew, it's about using scientific research to determine the best opportunities to promote alertness when they are on duty and maximise rest during their down time on these flights. Customer feedback on food choices, separate stretching and wellbeing zones, as well as entertainment options, will also be tested.

No commercial airline has ever flown direct from NY to Australia.
