Formula 2: Anthoine Hubert killed in Belgium crash

Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton walks next to his damaged car on the circuit after crashing into a wall during the third practice session at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Spa

F2 racing driver Anthoine Hubert has been killed in an horrendous crash at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa racing circuit.

On top of his F2 race wins, he also triumphed overall in the GP3 Championship previous year.

He won the Monaco Grand Prix and French Grand Prix earlier this year.

The 22-year-old Frenchman died following an estimated 160 mph (257 kph) collision with USA driver Juan-Manuel Correa's auto as they exited a corner on Lap 2 at the high-speed Spa-Francorchamps track, which just hours earlier saw qualifying for Sunday's Formula One race.

Emergency crews rushed to one of motorsport's most recognisable corners, but one hour and 28 minutes after the second-lap accident Hubert was pronounced dead at the on-track medical centre.

Correa, 20, is in "stable condition" and is being treated at a local hospital, while a third driver, Frenchman Giuliano Alesi was "declared fit" at the medical center, according to the FIA.

There was no immediate further information on Correa's condition. All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it [sic] not appreciated enough.

Motor sport's governing body, the FIA, also said that it was "providing support to the event organizers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident".

"Everyone in the team sends out thoughts and energy to Juan Manuel as he fights to recover and to the family and loved ones of Anthoine at this bad time".

"Anthoine was a member of the Renault Sport Academy and raced in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, the final ladder to F1", said Renault in a statement. God rest your soul Anthoine.

"We extend our honest condolences to his family, friends, and supporters". "Not from the fans [or] some of the people actually working in the sport".

Five-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Dutch driver Max Verstappen expressed their sadness about Hubert's passing on social media. Let's lift him up and remember him. Giuliano Alesi only made it a few more meters before stopping his vehicle with terminal damage.

Hubert, was 22 and a Renault development driver from Lyon in France. "All my thoughts goes to his family", adding "Repose en paix" - or rest in peace - in French.
