Trump confirms China tariffs due Sunday are 'on'

Nearly one-half of our companies say they lost sales in China due to tariffs.

"The majority of American companies surveyed remain committed to the China market and few are now divesting existing operations", according to the survey results released Thursday in Washington.

Trump last week thunderously demanded that United States companies withdraw from China and announced he was ratcheting up duty rates by five percent, after Beijing retaliated with tariffs on $75bn in American exports.

The survey, taken in June before those remarks by Trump, showed a majority of USA companies remained committed to the China markets and few were divesting existing operations.

The survey by the USCBC, which comprises about 200 companies that do business with China, offers a snapshot of how tariff uncertainty and the trade conflict are affecting American companies in China.

"We do not believe that he wishes to encourage other American companies that have successful operations in China to leave", Allen said. Now, investors are hopeful that progress might be imminent, even if details are scant, said Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni research.

"Losing market share is easy and gaining it is very, very hard".

Drone war takes flight in Iran
Pompeo also tweeted , "We discussed how Iran is leveraging its foothold in Syria to threaten Israel and its neighbors". Hezbollah said one of the drones was rigged with explosives and caused some damage to the organisation's media centre.

"China's most recent response of announcing a new tariff increase on US goods has shown that the current action being taken is no longer appropriate", USTR said in its notice announcing the higher tariff rates. "So these costs are potentially long term", he added. "They really want to make a deal, and the reason they want to make a deal is they've lost millions and millions of jobs, they're losing thousands of companies, they're leaving China".

"Chinese customers are concerned about supply chain links that depend on American companies, which they increasingly view as unreliable business partners as a result of the volatility of the bilateral commercial relationship", said the report that accompanied the survey.

The council noted that 95 per cent of member companies invest in China to access the domestic market, while less than a quarter invest there to export regionally or to the United States. "We're having conversations with China".

Trump initiated the trade war previous year because of complaints over unfair Chinese trade practices.

Still, not many companies moved operations back to the US.

In earlier rounds of escalation, Beijing had pledged to hit back at any USA tariff hike.

"The most important thing at the moment is that the two sides create conditions for the continuation of consultations", Gao said.
