Nigel Farage says PM Johnson does not want a no-deal Brexit

British PM faces Brexit rebellion, threatens election

The government has said that if it loses a vote on delaying Brexit later on Tuesday it will put forward another vote on Wednesday to hold an early election on October 14.

Andreeva says the EU's executive body, which supervises Brexit negotiations on behalf of Britain's 27 European partners, is operating on the "working assumption" that Britain will leave the bloc on October 31.

As Johnson played Brexit chess with lawmakers, opponents cast his tactics as undemocratic, including an order to suspend parliament for more than a month beginning next week.

Johnson says he wants to agree a divorce deal with Brussels, but says if this is not possible, Britain should leave the European Union next month regardless. Not counting the brief slide in the autumn of 2016, in which the currency fell around 6% in a matter of minutes before recovering, the pound is now at its lowest level since 1985.

Critics said Johnson's move was a bid to silence MPs.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn told parliament that Johnson's was a government with "no mandate, no morals and, as of today, no majority".

Johnson made his own threat to call a poll at an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday evening, the government official said, expressing confidence that the necessary two-thirds of MPs would back it.

There was speculation yesterday that a snap election was on the horizon as Tory rebels threaten to stop a clean Brexit, with Prime Minister Johnson having told his MPs that they face being kicked out of the party if they vote against the government.

The bloc is adamant it will not renegotiate the agreement struck with former Prime Minister Theresa May, which Johnson considers unacceptable.

Johnson's opponents are putting forward a bill that would force him to delay Brexit until January 31.

An early election could give Johnson a majority, although it is also a big risk, as the political landscape was deeply fragmented by the 2016 referendum.

Johnson cast the challenge as an attempt to force Britain to surrender to the European Union just as he hopes to secure concessions on the terms of the divorce - a step he said he would never accept.

The Prime Minister suffered an embarrassing blow even before the vote, when Conservative MP Phillip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats right as Johnson was addressing the House on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said about 700 demonstrators gathered in Queen Street to oppose the decision to "prorogue" Parliament.

The EU on Tuesday said a Brexit without a deal is a "very distinct" possibility and everyone has to be prepared for that.

The Bill to prevent no-deal -.

"The Prime Minister does not want an election, he wants four weeks of negotiations to get a deal, so if MPs vote for another pointless delay they will have to explain to people what they are doing".

Pro and anti-Brexit protesters compete for attention outside the Houses of Parliament in central London on September 3, 2019. Corbyn claimed Johnson was attempting to force no deal in a manner that was "unprecedented, anti-democratic and unconstitutional".
