United Nations calls for accountability in Saudi-led attack on Yemen prison

Over 100 killed by Saudi-led air strike on Yemen detention centre: Red Cross

In what was described as its deadliest attack on Yemen this year, the US -backed Saudi-led coalition on Sunday killed more than 100 people with airstrikes on a detention center in Dhamar city, forcing aid workers to divert medical supplies intended for the nation's cholera epidemic to treat victims of the bombing.

Yemeni Red Crescent workers placed corpses in white bags while bulldozers and other heavy equipment moved through the rubble to try to retrieve bodies before decay set in at the site in Dhamar in southwest Yemen.

In a tweet, the International Red Cross said it was providing 200 body bags and enough medical supplies to treat 100 critically wounded people.

"The death toll will be quite high", he mentioned.

The Red Cross, which inspects detention centers as part of its global mission, said that it had visited detainees at the site in the past.

The Saudi-led coalition, which has waged war on the Iran-backed Houthis since 2015, has faced worldwide criticism for airstrikes that have hit schools, hospitals and wedding parties, killing thousands of civilians. The coalition has never been informed. about the location.

Local residents, however, said it was a detention centre in the city that was hit.

SANAA, Yemen - Yemen was reeling Monday from the deadliest attack so far this year after multiple airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition hit a detention centre run by the country's rebels the previous day, killing over 100 people and wounding dozens.

The Houthis, meanwhile, control the major population centres and have stepped up cross-border missiles and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent months, hitting an airport and a major oil field in the past few weeks alone.

The Western-backed alliance intervened in Yemen in March 2015 against the Houthis after they ousted the internationally recognized government from power in the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014.

The officials say the airstrikes took place Sunday and targeted a university in the city of Dhamar, which the Houthi rebels use as a detention center.

The United Arab Emirates, a key member of the coalition backing the Yemeni government, has also trained and supported secessionists who seek an independent southern Yemen.

The United Nations is trying to ease tension in Yemen to prepare for political negotiations to end the war that has killed tens of thousands and pushed the long-impoverished country to the brink of starvation.

"There are three buildings hit and the building where the detainees were located, a lot of them or the majority has been killed", Rauchenstein told Reuters by telephone.

Griffiths, in a joint statement with Lise Grande, Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, called for an investigation into the bombing on prisoners, stressing that a justice should be achieved.
