UK PM Boris Johnson suffers another Parliament blow over Brexit

H3 uk brexit eu boris johnson parliament loses majority

Those in Tory ranks who can't abide Boris Johnson's dalliance with a no-deal Brexit voted against him, and tonight, Australian time, the alliance of defectors and Labor plans to bring forward a bill to delay the UK's departure from the EU.

In a third stinging defeat in two days, the House of Commons roundly dismissed the UK Prime Minister's demand for an election.

Johnson condemned the opposition legislation as a "surrender bill" that would tie his hands and "wreck any chance" of Britain concluding successful negotiations with the EU.

Mr Corbyn said: "Let this bill pass, then gain royal assent, then we will back an election so we do not crash out with a no-deal exit from the European Union".

Following a moment of confusion, an amendment seeking to give MPs a vote on Theresa May's final Brexit deal was also passed - potentially paving the way for it to be put before the Commons for the first time.

The defeat comes the day after MPs defied the government in a preparatory vote on the draft Brexit bill on Tuesday evening, including 21 of Johnson's own Conservative lawmakers - several of them distinguished former ministers.

The European Commission meanwhile said Britain had not yet come up with any alternative for the most controversial bit of the current deal, relating to the Irish border.

India sweep series with big win over West Indies
The hosts were45-2 at the end of the third day's play with Dareen Bravo and Sharmarh Brooks batting at 18 and 4 respectively. Asked about India's strategy, Bumrah said the plan was to create pressure in the first innings.

Leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn declined to say he wanted an election, calling it "like the poisoned apple offered to Snow White by the wicked queen".

It states that if the United Kingdom and European Union have not reached a deal by October 19 then Mr Johnson would have to request a Brexit extension.

British prime ministers must stand before an often-boisterous House of Commons and take questions every Wednesday. It is now being debated in the House of Lords. Late tonight, Johnson is expected to initiate proceedings for a general election on October 15.

The Labour Party have been itching for an election for years, so it may have been safe to assume they would welcome Johnson's call for one.

But events have spiraled out of his control. He leads a government with no majority in Parliament and may not be able to secure an election that could change that fact. His government lost its working majority as one Conservative lawmaker defected to the opposition, and more than 20 Tory legislators sided with the opposition on the vote.

Another Conservative, Rory Stewart, told reporters he was told he would be expelled from the partyvia text message. As Johnson was speaking Tuesday, Lee walked across the chamber and sat down with the Liberal Democrats, several of whom had to scooch over to make room. "I am truly sad that it should end in this way".

He alleged fellow senior Conservative MP, Ken Clarke, who sided with the Opposition in yesterday's crucial No Deal Brexit vote, was verbally abused by Mr Cummings. A human rights campaigner has sued in Northern Ireland, arguing that the historic Good Friday peace accord is in jeopardy because of Johnson's actions.
