Hurricane Dorian spins damaging tornadoes into the North Carolina coast

The Latest on Hurricane Dorian - 4 PM Saturday Update

On Thursday, Hurricane Dorian started to make its way toward the Carolinas, bringing tropical storm conditions along the SC coast and flooding in Charleston while the threat of tornadoes loomed in North Carolina. As Dorian crept dangerously closer, the wind picked up, sending sheets of rain sideways. The storm has regained strength.

Rains and wind pelt Charleston, S.C., early on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, as Hurricane Dorian enters the area.

The eyewall, the portion of the storm which contains the strongest winds, was 30 miles south of Cape Fear as of 8 p.m., bringing hurricane conditions along portions of the North Carolina coast, while the SC coast continued to face tropical storm conditions, the National Hurricane Center said.

Dorian is about 70 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, and about 170 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The hurricane center said the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Charleston, S.C., recently reported a wind gust to 68 miles per hour at the Charleston International Airport.

Mr Minnis confirmed the storm's death toll had risen to at least 20 during a news conference in which he described the unthinkable damage that parts of his island nation had sustained.

"It's insane", said Ostian Dean, while holding her baby girl, after the U.S. Coast Guard rescued them from Marsh Harbour, where the storm destroyed her home.

As conditions began to deteriorate in Charleston early Thursday, emergency management officials requested that citizens shelter in place, the Charleston Police Department said on Twitter.

"Hurricane Dorian continues to move away from Central Florida this afternoon and the sun is breaking out from behind the clouds". The message this morning is this: Get to safety and stay there.

On Thursday morning, the eye of Hurricane Dorian was off the coast of SC, moving north-north-east at 8mph. And hundreds of shelter animals were airlifted from coastal SC to Delaware.

Both states have been dealing with some coastal flooding from the storm's edges, which is expected to worsen throughout Wednesday as Dorian passes Georgia.

The National Hurricane Center forecast as much as 15 inches of rain for the coastal Carolinas, with flash-flooding likely.

Although flooding and wind in Charleston weren't almost as bad as feared, Dorian toppled about 150 trees, swamped roads and brought down power lines, officials said. "This is not a storm to mess with". Emergencies have already been declared in Florida and Georgia. For now, forecasters are calling for periods of rain in coastal areas of New Jersey from late Thursday night through Friday night.
