Brexit, Boris and bedlam: Britain 'hobbled' by stalemate

The charismatic but divisive British leader finds himself facing a political impasse just six weeks after taking over from his beleaguered predecessor Theresa May

A tumultuous week in the House of Commons ended Monday night with the Queen proroguing Parliament until October 14 at Mr. Johnson's request after MPs would not give him the required consent to call an early election.

That agreement was not approved by Parliament and Mr. Johnson has said that he wants the backstop scrapped because it ties Britain too closely with the EU.

The EU says Britain has not produced any concrete proposals for replacing the contentious "backstop", a provision in the withdrawal agreement reached by Johnson's predecessor Theresa May that is created to ensure an open border between EU member Ireland and the UK's Northern Ireland.

Speaking to the PA news agency before a No To No Deal rally in Glasgow on Monday, Mr Brown said: "I think the truth is, no-deal is a risk to medical supplies, food supplies, a risk to the components that are coming in for British industry, it puts jobs at risk and he's not wanting that to be debated".

As Mr Johnson laughed, he added: 'We want to be your friend and ally, your Athena, in doing so.' According to Greek mythology, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, repeatedly helped Hercules, her half-brother.

The Prime Minister did say his government had given a "unilateral declaration that under no circumstances there won't be any checks at that border imposed by the United Kingdom - that will never happen - we must ensure there is an open border and that goods and people can circulate in the normal way".

This would likely move the Brexit battle to the courts and, with no real precedent for such a situation, the outcome and how long it might take to reach one are highly uncertain.

Let's consider the possibility that Johnson has a new deal in place on 17 October.

That's a big blow for the British Parliament.

So for Mr Corbyn's plan to succeed, he'd ideally need to win a confidence motion in the House in the two-week interim after the initial motion, allowing him to request the extension himself. "In our view, neither seeking to defy the law, nor encouraging the European Union not to grant an extension, are likely to succeed".

"We have no other choice but to see if we can get a deal with them".

In response, the premier called a snap election for early next month, but MPs refused to support him - and a second attempt later on Monday also looks doomed as it is opposed by opposition leaders. They could also propose a different length of delay. There has been debate about whether this is possible, but the government has yet to respond directly to those concerns.

Johnson said on Tuesday he would not request an extension to Brexit, hours after a law came into force demanding that he delay until 2020 unless he can strike a divorce deal.

It's only seven weeks since Mr Johnson became prime minister, but so much has happened in that time and the style and substance of the government has changed so much that already Mrs May's regime feels like ancient history.

Parliament and opposition parties, meanwhile, will be cast as villains determined to thwart the will of the people with endless delays.

Labour MP Caroline Flint says the aim is to "show there is a sizeable voice building across the house to secure a deal".

Regarding the backstop, Mr Varadker said that the Irish government are open to alternatives but said there had been no alternative proposals made as of yet.

Johnson accused his opponents of shirking their duty by blocking an early election.

The chaos is being compounded by Johnson's decision to suspend parliament for over a month from some point between Monday and Thursday. Thus, the Tories have a 14 percent lead over the Labour Party.

Last night MPs were planning to stage protests in the Commons chamber as the controversial prorogation of parliament was officially implemented.

The EU has argued that the Irish border, with its network of hundreds of crossings and no visible frontier, is unlike any border in the world, which is why the backstop is needed.

However, he has no majority in the House of Commons, having expelled 21 MPs from his own Conservative party last week for voting for the rebel legislation.

Boris Johnson insists he wants a deal.

However the current parliament would be unlikely to switch stance and approve a no-deal exit by then. Giving a clear indication that he would oppose Johnson's plans to the last, he said in his time as Speaker, "To deploy a perhaps unsafe phrase, I have also sought to be the backbencher's backstop". The days between those dates are now largely taken up by an European Union summit at which he hopes to agree a new deal, and a debate on his new legislative programme.
