Fugitive couple facing murder charges in custody after tip

Blake and Susan Barksdale

The married murder suspects who escaped from a prison van last month have been recaptured after more than two weeks on the lam, reports CBS Tucson, Arizona affiliate KOLD-TV.

Surveillance photo of Blane Barksdale (L), 56, and Susan Barksdale (R), 59, from San Juan County Jail, Utah.

The Barksdales escaped August 26 in Utah while being brought from upstate NY to Tucson to face charges in the April death of a 72-year-old man. Authorities said the couple overpowered two private security guards in the transport van after Susan Barksdale faked a medical emergency.

"I don't think these two guards were equipped physically and emotionally with the experience needed for these types of individuals", said U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona David Gonzales, according to The Associated Press. Additional details were not immediately disclosed.

The Barksdales had initially been taken into custody on May 24 near Rochester, New York, on suspicion of first-degree murder and other crimes related to the April death of a 72-year-old man in Tucson. They allegedly killed Bligh and burned down his home, then fled to Upstate New York in an RV.

The U.S. Marshals, with assistance from our Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement partners tracked the Barksdale's to the area of Tonto Basin, Arizona, which is a town located just north of Roosevelt Lake.

Authorities re-arrested Blane and Susan Barksdale on Wednesday night in Punkin Center, Arizona, according to a social media post by the Navajo County Sheriff's Office.

Tehran: Iranian Tanker Unloaded Cargo on Mediterranean Coast
The US has been trying to seize the vessel as part of its sanctions targeting the Iranian energy industry. After the captain gave no positive response, he and the ship were put under United States sanctions.

They weren't certain if Susan and Blane Barksdale, described by officials as "middle-aged Bonnie and Clyde", were inside, but they blasted commands through a megaphone for everyone to come out with their hands up.

Detectives also believed more than 100 firearms were stolen from the home and only around 30 have since been recovered.

At a news conference Thursday, David Gonzales, the US marshal for Arizona, says the arrest of Blane and Susan Barksdale is "obviously a big relief off our shoulders".

But once the two unarmed guards opened the back door, the Barksdales attacked, he said.

The Barksdales then allegedly tied up the guards using shoe laces and put them into the back of the vehicle with a third prisoner who played no part in the escape.

On May 1, an arrest warrant was issued for the Barksdales on charges including first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, arson, and auto theft, police said.

The Barksdales were being extradited from upstate NY, where they were arrested in May. "Blane Barksdale has the dubious distinction of fulfilling that requirement".
