Britain, France, Germany request United Nations meeting on NK missile launch

President Donald Trump meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone South Korea. Trump the self-styled deal-maker president is struggling

"The successful new-type SLBM test-firing is of great significance as it ushered in a new phase in containing the external threats to the DPRK and further bolstering its military muscle for self-defense", the KCNA said, using the official name of the communist nation.

North Korea has confirmed it test-fired a new type of a submarine-launched ballistic missile, a significant escalation from the short-range tests it has conducted since May.

"The new-type ballistic missile was sacked in vertical mode" in the waters off Wonsan Bay on Wednesday, the North's KCNA state news agency reported.

"The launching of ballistic missiles violates UN Security Council resolutions and we strongly protest and strongly condemn it", Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters.

"The new-type ballistic missile was sacked in vertical mode", on Wednesday in the waters off Wonsan Bay, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

The missile, launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Wednesday at 1:13 AM, shot up into the night sky in a 4,200-mile flight over the Pacific Ocean to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo said the Pukguksong would have had a range of about 1,300 km (910 miles) on a standard trajectory. North Korea-dispatched photos showed the missile rising and spewing bright flames above a cloud of smoke from the sea, but the launch platform was not identifiable.

Negotiations have been frozen since the breakdown of a summit between Mr Trump and Mr Kim in Vietnam in February.

This is the longest-range North Korean missile test for a considerable period.

It's not that we started badly but then we didn't concentrate when the opposition were able to hurt us. Real Madrid will play at home on Tuesday afternoon in the Champions League .

The launch threatened to raise tensions as Washington and Pyongyang planned to resume talks over the North's nuclear weapons program this weekend.

The missile test was a reminder of North Korea's military capabilities and an indication that it intends to drive a hard bargain in the talks, experts said. One America's Chanel Rion has more from Seoul, South Korea.

"Pyongyang seems set to push Washington to back off from past demands of full denuclearisation, for what are only promises of sanctions relief".

The missile flew a distance of 450 kilometers before entering waters off Japan.

But North Korea continued its series of missile tests yesterday.

Being submarine-capable is important as it means North Korea could launch missiles far outside its territory.

"As soon as the United States chose to engage in a direct conversation with North Korea... abandoning their usual, sometimes very harsh and even insulting rhetoric, the hope for a peaceful settlement immediately appeared", Putin said.

KCNA released a photo of what appeared to be a missile launched from a submarine. He said the missile is under development and that North Korea must test-fire it from a submarine before deploying it.

Hours before the launch, Pyongyang said denuclearisation talks with the USA could resume this week.
