4 homeless men killed in NY, apparently while they slept

Four homeless men were killed and another was injured during an attack in Chinatown Oct. 5 2019

"There appears to be no concrete motive as of now, Chief Baldassano said: "[They were] random attacks ... not motivated by race or age". Police recovered a metal pipe that was still in the suspect's hands when he was arrested after fleeing following the attacks.

NY police officers investigate the scene of an attack in the city's Chinatown neighborhood on October 5.

New York City authorities said four men, who are believed to be homeless, were beaten to death with a "metal object" while they were sleeping.

The victims apparently were asleep when they were attacked in three different locations.

A 24-year-old man, who police also believe is homeless, is in custody and considered a person of interest, according to Assistant Chief Stephen J. Hughes.

New York Police Department officers were called around 2:10 a.m.to an area in Chinatown, and found one man dead and another critically injured, according to police.

A fifth man was seriously injured after also being targeted in Manhattan's Chinatown district in the early hours of Saturday.

Police investigators are questioning another homeless man in connection with the killings, the New York Daily News has reported. They all died from trauma to the head.

Officials have not released the identities of the victims but said they were all believed to be homeless.

Around 4am, three more victims were found along East Broadway, just three blocks away from where the first two victims were found.

Late at night, when the shops close, it turns into a quiet, desolate neighborhood that was the setting for Saturday's attacks.
