Asia Mixed Ahead of Trade Talks

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Monday said it was possible USA and Chinese trade negotiators could make progress when they meet in Washington this week, and said Washington was open to looking at what proposals Beijing brought.

Last week saw a string of soft US economic data that raised doubts on the assumption by many that the US economy will be more resilient than other economies to damage from Sino-US trade war.

Kudlow added that Chinese negotiators have been a "little more cooperative recently" as they have recently purchased US agricultural products like soybeans, pork and wheat.

7, US stocks moved broadly lower in early trading as the USA and China prepare for their latest round of trade war talks.

Tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods are scheduled to rise to 30% on October 15.

U.S. President Donald Trump later threatened to "totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey" if Ankara does anything "off limits".

"However, China does need our agricultural products and the USA needs to sell to China, so there could be a "mini" deal".

"I think China's starting to see that with the USA economy slowing and all the political turmoil that they're probably thinking the US might be not quite in as strong a bargaining position as they were a weeks or few months ago", he said in an interview.

Climate activists impressed with Greta Thunberg's energy
Thunberg, who arrived in the USA from Britain on a yacht, is now travelling by electric vehicle, a spokeswoman said. Ms Thunberg's bio used to read: " A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future ".

As reports claim the two sides could agree to a series of smaller deals ahead of a long term agreement, Kudlow said the White House is "open to a number of ideas".

Kudlow added that Chinese negotiators have been a "little more cooperative recently" as they have recently purchased USA agricultural products like soybeans, pork and wheat.

He added that the administration had convened a "study group" to examine those issues, but said it was "very early" in its deliberations.

Volume on US exchanges was 5.73 billion shares, compared with the 7.23 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

The Turkish lira lost 2.39% versus the US dollar at 5.84, its weakest in over a month. When speaking to reporters on the White House lawn last Thursday, Trump again urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate unsubstantiated allegations of corruption by former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, and also stated unprompted that he wanted China to launch its own investigation.

Another complicating factor is US support for pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

China's state broadcaster dropped the team's games, and a Chinese corporate sponsor withdrew after Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted, "Fight for Freedom, Stand with Hong Kong".

He swiftly deleted the tweet and apologized to fans in China, where the Rockets have a large following from the years that Chinese basketball star Yao Ming played on the team.
