Climate protests block roads across Europe

On Wall Street in New York City, protesters held a mock funeral march and splashed the Charging Bull, the huge bronze tourist attraction, with a coat of red paint resembling blood.

Climate activists are back at it again, protesting all over the country as part of Extinction Rebellion's week of action against climate change.

Dutch police said they had arrested 90 people after Extinction Rebellion members occupied a bridge outside the famed Rijksmuseum art gallery.

The force said in a statement: "As of 08:00hrs this morning there have been a total of 21 arrests in connection with the Extinction Rebellion protests".

Extinction Rebellion says some protestors are willing to be arrested.

The protests in Canada were on some of the country's busiest bridges including Angus L. Macdonald Bridge over Halifax Harbour, the Burrard Street bridge in Vancouver and the Prince Edward Viaduct in Toronto where protesters sprawled out on the roadway, according to The Canadian Press.

"Some might call us protesters, I call us protectors", said spokesperson Simon Oosterman.

Police have managed to break into an Extinction Rebellion van on Westminster Bridge and have arrested the driver, an onlooker said. The group took to the streets in the British capital on Monday morning as part of a fresh "international rebellion".

Some protesters have staged a sit-in and police are struggling to move them on.

"We're here because the government is not doing enough on the climate emergency", protester Lizzy Mansfield said.

Some activists glued or chained themselves to cars parked in the middle of roads or to street lamps, making it hard for police officers to detain them.

Early on Monday, a group of activists locked themselves to a mock nuclear missile outside the Ministry of Defence, calling on the government to redirect funds spent on Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent towards policies to combat climate change.
