Turkey preparing military operation by land and air in Syria

United States forces "will not support or be involved in the [Turkish] operation" and "will no longer be in the immediate area", White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham confirmed USA troops "will not support or be involved in the operation" and "will no longer be in the immediate area".

Mekdad said that Kurdish militias in Syria were being "played" by Washington.

"The American forces did not fulfill their commitments and withdrew their forces from the border areas with Turkey, and Turkey is now preparing for an invasion operation of northern and eastern Syria", the SDF said.

Erdogan and President Trump spoke on the phone on Sunday and agreed to meet in Washington next month to discuss the issues with the safe zone in northeastern Syria.

Erdogan's threats were a warning that a US-Turkish deal to secure Syria's troubled border with Turkey was faltering.

Turkey views the main force within the SDF, called the People's Protection Units, as an extension of the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

It wants to drive the YPG away from its border and create a space inside Syria where 2 million Syrian refugees now hosted in Turkey can be settled.

The White House recently announced plans to pull back USA troops from northern Syria.

"If such an action occurs, it will not only remove Turkey's security concern, but will result in widespread material and human damage", the foreign ministry said in a separate statement.

The Kurds have been a key ally for the United States in its campaign against the Islamic State militant group in Syria.

He added, "Turkey, Europe, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and the Kurds will now have to figure the situation out, and what they want to do with the captured ISIS fighters in their neighborhood".

SDF spokesman Kino Gabriel said on October 7 that the group had been "stabbed in the back" by the "surprise" USA statement.

It hosts 3.6 million Syrians sheltering from their country's more than eight-year-old conflict. We've been in Syria for many years.

The White House earlier this week announced plans to move USA troops out of harm's way in northern Syria because it seemed that Turkey was intent on moving into Syria to confront Kurdish fighters that it claims are terrorists that threaten its national security.

Yahoo News has cited an unnamed senior Trump administration official as saying that United States media reports about the Pentagon being "blindsided" by the White House's intent to pull out American troops out of northern Syria hold no water.
