DUP won't support deal that leaves NI in European Union structures

LONDON ENGLAND- OCTOBER 08 British Prime Minister Boris Johnson greets President of the European Parliament David Sassoli ahead of a private meeting at 10 Downing Street

Despite member states fully or partially banning foreign donations to political parties or candidates, foreign actors find ways to circumvent those rules, say MEPs, singling out cases of the Front National in France, and allegations reported by media on the Freedom Party in Austria, Lega in Italy and Leave.eu in the UK.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar met on Thursday to talk about contentious border and customs issues. Speaking to reporters, Varadkar later said the meeting was "very positive", suggesting it would be a "short pathway, rather than a long one".

EU Council President Donald Tusk said on Friday morning that "the United Kingdom has still not come forward with a workable, realistic proposal" but tempered that by saying that "even the slight chance (that a deal can be struck) must be used".

"There's many a slip between cup and lip", he warned.

Dublin will have to consent to any solution to the toughest problem of all: how to prevent the British province of Northern Ireland from becoming a backdoor into the EU's markets without having border controls.

Meanwhile, UK's Brexit negotiator arrived at the European Commission.

Since the 2016 British referendum vote for Brexit, negotiations have bounced back and forth between London and Brussels.

The backstop is an insurance policy that was created to ensure no customs or regulatory checks on the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland after Brexit.

The challenge of keeping this border invisible - something that has underpinned both the local economy and the region's peace deal - has dominated Brexit discussions for three years, ever since the United Kingdom voted in 2016 to leave the EU.

Johnson and Varadkar met at Thornton Manor, a venue more commonly used for luxury weddings than discussing worldwide divorce terms.

After British MPs rejected the previous "backstop" plan to keep the border open, Johnson presented a new proposal last week - but it received a cold reception in Brussels. A free-flowing border is considered vital to maintaining peace in Northern Ireland, which was plagued by three decades of violence, largely brought to an end with the 1998 Good Friday peace accords. He said that "even the slightest chance must be used" to get a deal.

Tusk said "there is no guarantee of success and the time is practically up" but insisted both sides should use every opportunity available ahead of Britain's scheduled October 31 departure date.
