Tens of thousands evacuated as California wildfires rage

Northern California hit by major power cuts over wildfire fears

More than 100,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes in Southern California, as the state continues to fight numerous wildfires that sprung up starting Thursday.

El Dorado County Fire Chief Lloyd Ogan said early on that emergency personnel couldn't revive Mardis after arriving at his family's home.

A mobile home community burned and a middle school was evacuated Thursday as a wildfire rapidly spread in Southern California, one of several blazes statewide fed by Santa Ana winds. The fire started near Sylmar northeast of the interchange of the 210 and 5 freeways, jumped those highways and kept running to the southwest north of the 118 near the densely populated Granada Hills area. "This is going to take a few days", Terrazas said during a Friday morning news briefing, adding that the fire was still zero per cent contained.

The blaze is unpredictable, LAPD Chief Michel Moore warned, and he urged those in evacuation areas to follow orders to leave. It was only 10 percent contained as of Friday morning, Riverside County Fire Department (RCFD) officials said. The metro line in the area was also shut down. More than 1,000 firefighters have been deployed to this fire alone.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The Los Angeles Police Department said on Twitter it is helping carry out evacuations and has declared a "citywide tactical alert".

"A moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event will continue to bring unsafe fire weather conditions to most of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties through late Friday afternoon", NWS said in its latest alert.

Mortar shells hit Turkish border town, no casualties
Brett McGurk, who was Trump's special envoy for the fight against ISIS, also decried the decision in an interview with NPR . The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights reported that people had begun fleeing the border town of Tal Abyad.

In Northern California, utility Pacific Gas & Electric also cut power to hundreds of thousands of customers this week, similarly hoping to prevent wildfires during windy conditions.

About 312,000 customers remained in the dark Friday as a result of the shutoffs created to reduce the threat of wildfire that can be sparked by lines downed in heavy winds.

The Saddleridge fire first started on Thursday night in the San Fernando Valley and since that time has spread into neighbouring northern parts of the city.

"This is not ... a climate change story as much as a story about greed and mismanagement over the course of decades", Newsom said.

PG&E cast the blackouts as a matter of public safety to prevent the kind of blazes that have killed scores of people over the past couple of years, destroyed thousands of homes, and ran up tens of billions of dollars in claims that drove the company into bankruptcy.

Because of the unsafe weather in the forecast, PG&E cut power Wednesday to an estimated 2 million people in an area that spanned the Bay Area, the wine country north of San Francisco, the agricultural Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada foothills. Maximum winds of 46 miles per hour were recorded in Sylmar on Thursday night, the National Weather Service said.

PG&E equipment fires were blamed for triggering the horrific Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history, which ravaged the state in November 2018.
